Liverpool and Barcelona are looking for a new manager and several names have been linked with both jobs. Jurgen Klopp announced last month that he would be leaving Liverpool, with Xavi Hernández saying the same a day later about his position at Barcelona. Both clubs now need top quality replacements.
Liverpool-linked Hansi Flick wants to become Barcelona coach Jurgen Klopp’s departure will leave a huge void at Liverpool. He is one of the best managers we have ever seen in this country and he will not be easy to replace. Xabi Alonso is the name most Reds fans think of when looking for a new manager, but there are other managers on FSG’s shortlist.
As reported late last month, Liverpool’s shortlist included four players: Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi, Julien Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick. The latter has been out of a job since losing his top job in Germany last year. He would like to return to management and could be imagined to be interested in succeeding Klopp at Liverpool.
However, Fabrizio Romano revealed today that Flick wants to replace Xavi as Barcelona’s next manager when he leaves the club this summer. “There are reports that Joan Laporta is the preferred successor to replace Xavi, the former coach of Bayern Munich and Germany,” the reporter told the daily briefing.”I have no confirmation of this. It’s still early days at Barca as they identify their preferred candidates and begin interviews.
It will take some time.”It is clear that Flick wants to work at Barcelona, but so far nothing has happened, no decision has been made and nothing has progressed.Liverpool won’t be able to find someone like Jurgen Klopp, but they would be wise to find someone with some resemblance to the German.
Hansi Flick is a great director. He is one of only two managers in Bayern’s history to have achieved the treble and there is no reason why he could not have done it at another club. But we think it will be very difficult for Flick to match anything Klopp has done, let alone the respect he has commanded at Liverpool.Liverpool need to find someone who can raise the level of excitement at Anfield, not just because of his style of play, but because of who he is.
As good as Flick is, we don’t think he’s the right fit for Liverpool. But the Barcelona job would suit the German better.
