West Ham United striker Michael Antonio has revealed the secret behind Jurgen Klopp’s surprise decision to leave Liverpool. The German manager announced last week that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.
Klopp has been very successful since joining Liverpool in October 2015. He won the Champions League in 2019 and ended the club’s long wait to win the Premier League in 2020. The announcement comes as Liverpool chase four more trophies this season.
Liverpool will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on February 25 and are still in the running to win the FA Cup and Europa League. Wednesday night’s 4-1 win over Chelsea moved Liverpool five points clear of the Premier League leaders.
Last week, Klopp said he decided to leave Liverpool because he had “no energy left” after eight tough years. But Antonio revealed he had heard rumors that Klopp had considered his future last season. He also believes Klopp’s sudden departure could have been due to his family wanting to return home.
Speaking on the BBC’s The Players podcast, he said: “To be honest, I heard he was thinking about leaving last season. But after what he did last year and this year, I’m honestly shocked that he made the announcement. From what I hear, and it may not be true, his family wants to go home, to be honest.
This was a rumour. “He will be truly missed. He was fantastic for the club. “You always want the best manager in the league and it’s a shame he’s gone.”Antonio infuriated Liverpool fans earlier this season when he tipped West Ham to beat the Reds at Anfield and overtake them in the Premier League.
His team lost 3-1 and the striker was particularly disappointing.
