The German manager shocked the football world on Friday by announcing that this would be his final season at Anfield, despite his side topping the Premier League and still challenging for glory in three other cup competitions. Klopp has so far denied he has another role to play, instead insisting he needs to take a break from football after eight-and-a-half years on Merseyside.
He also vowed not to take another job in England and announced he would not be able to lead the team against Liverpool. But, aged 56, he specified how long he would stay in charge if he were appointed to another position.
In September 2016, a year after replacing Brandon Rodgers at Liverpool, the former Borussia Dortmund manager announced his retirement. He expects to finish his career in Germany, telling Redaktions Network: “I will definitely come back (to make a living), but I still don’t know if I will come back to Germany as a coach. There will come a day when I will say: ” Thanks, I liked it.” Klopp achieved legendary status at Liverpool by guiding them to the Champions League in 2018/19, followed by their first group stage victory in 30 years.
During his tenure, the club won the League Cup, FA Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup. He received a standing ovation from the fans during Sunday’s FA Cup home game against Norwich. But he insists he cannot reverse his decision before the end of the campaign, despite the wishes of his supporters.
