Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk could leave Anfield later this year to follow manager Jurgen Klopp. Klopp announced last week that he would leave his position at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Assistant managers Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz are also leaving this summer, as is senior development coach Vitor Matos. Klopp’s departure could leave some players wondering about their future. Van Dijk was asked after Sunday’s 5-2 win over Norwich if he saw himself as part of the post-Klopp era at Anfield. As quoted by The Athletic, the Dutchman replied: “That’s a big question. I don’t know.”Van Dijk then reminded us that he still had 18 months left on his contract. “The club has a big task ahead.
This is known,Not only the manager but also the staff are leaving to replace the manager and there are too many things to change.”The club has a big job to do and I’m very curious to see where it goes. “But when that is announced, we will see where we are, but I can’t say anything yet,” he said. Klopp has been managing Liverpool since October 2015.
He signed Van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million. Van Dijk won seven trophies during his time at the Reds and could add to that tally in the coming months as Klopp’s men are currently top of the Premier League and still play in the UEFA Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup. Asked about the Klopp era, Van Dijk said: “I’m still very happy to be part of it. So I don’t want to talk about it.
That is my main focus now and we will see at the end of the season.”I want to fight every day to achieve the success we dream of. “That will give us a clearer picture of what the club wants going forward and then we’ll see.”
