Mohamed Salah will not return to Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations after Egypt suffered an unexpected penalty shoot-out defeat to DR Congo on Sunday night.
Salah returned to Merseyside for treatment after injuring his thigh in the group stage match against Ghana on January 18, according to the Egyptian Football Association.
Had his team made it this far, he would have recovered at the AXA Training Center before returning to the AFCON finals. But the 31-year-old will now stay at home as he recovers ahead of his final game under Jurgen Klopp.
Salah is expected to be sidelined for the next three weeks with the injury, meaning he will miss Premier League games against Chelsea and Arsenal over the next seven days.
