Virgil van Dijk is delighted to see Joe Gomez shine for Liverpool this season and get the plaudits he deserves. Gomez has impressed in a variety of roles for the Reds so far in the 2023/24 campaign, with Jurgen Klopp praising his importance after the side reached the Carabao Cup final in midweek.
Performance number two came as no surprise to Van Dijk, but the captain was proud of his defender’s widespread praise. Speaking on the Emirates FA Cup tie against Norwich City, Van Dijk wrote: “I’ve seen the manager say over the last few months that what we’ve done wouldn’t have been possible without Joe and I agree with that.“No matter what position he plays or what’s asked of him, Joey’s attitude couldn’t be better, so that’s great and more importantly it’s been worth it for him to get some recognition.
“I’ve made no secret that Joey has always been someone I enjoy playing with. He’s certainly not alone, but sometimes he feels like he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. “I would say it’s very useful, from a captain’s perspective and from a centre-back perspective, to have someone behind the back four who can play at an incredibly high level in any position.“Joey is always well-liked in the dressing room and, as I said, I’m one of his biggest fans.
I’m glad to see him in action, but more than anything, he’s a big help to the team.”I hope the recognition he’s getting now is normal because it means other people see him the way we see him.”
