Matt Bird will enjoy Liverpool FC Women’s return to Prenton Park this afternoon when they take on Arsenal Women in their first home game since 2024. After two away games at the start of the new year, the Reds return home to Barclays Women’s Super League action, kicking off against the Gunners at 4.30pm (GMT).
In his notes on the matchday schedule, Bird said: “This is our first home game since 2024 and we know it will be another very tough game but we are looking forward to it. “We love playing at Prenton Park and we have a good record, but we have to train and make sure we are on our ‘A’ game against Arsenal, who have strengthened their squad in this transfer window.“We can be confident because we know we can beat Arsenal like we did on the first day.
“Arsenal have had a very uneven pre-season as the summer tournament progresses, but we performed well that afternoon.“We know we can beat anyone on this day. I think we’ve beaten Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United in recent years and we’ve shown that there aren’t many teams that aren’t in the top four.“The way I see it is we have to keep our performance levels consistent and that’s what we’ve said as a group. To be honest, Bristol City’s FA Cup game two weeks ago was also a disappointing performance for the team.“So we have to focus on finishing from the start, work hard and get back to what we know we can do.
“We can reunite with Ceri Holland after she was suspended last weekend. I told the players after Sunday’s game that we gave people the benefit of the doubt because it was our first game against Bristol City in a month. Sometimes it’s hard to find a rhythm in these situations.”But no shirt is safe for today’s game and players must be eligible for selection in training.”
