The New England Patriots moved on from Bill Belichick this offseason, promoting Jarod Mayo as head coach through the 2024 season. Now Mayo will decide what to do with the rest of his staff who were his teammates last season.
One of those employees is Belichick’s son, Steve Belichick, who worked with Mayo as the linebackers coach (Belichick coached the outside linebackers, while Mayo coached the inside linebackers).
While things may be a little awkward, Belichick will still have a role with the team as an assistant coach or senior adviser, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss (via Dov Kleiman ).
Belichick has held a variety of roles with the Patriots since 2012, including defensive assistant, safeties coach, assistant coach and outside linebackers coach. But now that his father is gone, Belichick could either coach elsewhere or join whatever team he coaches with his father.
Bill Belichick has several suitors, including the Atlanta Falcons, and could look to bring some of his coaches, including former coordinators Josh McDaniels and Joe Judge, to his next destination. His son will undoubtedly be one of the guys Belichick will want to take to his next destination.
But maybe Steve wants to stay in New England or look for opportunities elsewhere. But at least Mayo can keep one of the Patriots’ longest-tenured assistants as he hopes to return the Patriots to their former glory under his leadership.Cold wire staffTyler is a contributing writer for Cold Wire.
