Kentucky fans are still waiting on the biggest decision of the offseason — and the tension around Malachi Moreno’s NBA Draft status only keeps growing.
While many in Big Blue Nation are hoping the talented Kentucky big man returns to Lexington for another season, there’s increasing belief that the NBA path is becoming more realistic by the day. Moreno’s recent pre-draft decisions, including skipping 5-on-5 scrimmages at the NBA Combine, have only fueled speculation that his stock may be climbing behind the scenes.
And because of that uncertainty, Mark Pope may already be preparing for life without him.
According to reports from BigBlueDylan, Kentucky remains heavily involved with Croatian prospect Michael Ružić, a versatile 7-footer who is expected to announce his college decision soon. BYU has long been viewed as the favorite, but Kentucky has reportedly stayed aggressive in the recruitment as Pope monitors Moreno’s draft situation.
If Moreno ultimately stays in the NBA Draft, Ružić could quickly become one of the Wildcats’ top remaining priorities.
The overseas big man brings a modern skill set that would fit naturally in Pope’s offensive system. Ružić shot around 36 percent from three-point range this season in Spain’s Liga Endesa while competing against professional-level competition. Even though his numbers — six points and three rebounds per game — may not jump off the page, many scouts believe his upside is far greater than the stats suggest.
One international scout reportedly described him as “one of the better available pickups right now,” praising his mobility, shooting ability, and positional flexibility. At nearly seven feet tall, Ružić has the ability to play both the power forward and center spots, making him an intriguing fit for Kentucky’s evolving frontcourt.
And if Moreno leaves, Kentucky could suddenly have both the need — and the NIL resources — to make a major push.
Pope has already added depth pieces like Franck Kepnang and Justin McBride, giving the Wildcats more physical options inside. But replacing Moreno’s long-term upside and overall impact would still be an enormous challenge.
That’s why Ružić’s recruitment suddenly feels far more important than it did a few weeks ago.
For now, everything still revolves around Moreno’s decision. Kentucky’s roster remains somewhat frozen until the NBA Draft process plays out, and fans may have to wait until late May before getting final clarity.
But one thing is becoming clear: Mark Pope isn’t waiting around without a plan.
And if Kentucky’s worst-case scenario becomes reality, BBN may quickly hear a new international name dominate the offseason conversation.
