Malachi Moreno’s NBA outlook is starting to shift in a way few expected.
When the Kentucky big man announced he would test the NBA Draft waters, the assumption was simple—get feedback, then return to Lexington. That path is still likely, but new projections suggest his stock may be stronger than originally believed.
In ESPN’s latest 2026 NBA Mock Draft, Jeremy Woo has Moreno going 43rd overall to the Brooklyn Nets. That places him firmly in the middle of the second round. While that range doesn’t guarantee a contract, it does signal that Moreno is very much on NBA teams’ radar as a potential pick.
That alone gives him something to seriously think about.
If Moreno feels confident he can solidify himself as one of the 60 players selected on draft night, the decision to stay in the draft becomes far more realistic. Still, there are strong reasons for him to return to Kentucky.
A second season could elevate his stock significantly, especially with the 2027 draft class expected to be less competitive. With noticeable development, Moreno could push himself into first-round consideration next year, where guaranteed contracts and long-term stability come into play.
Elsewhere in the mock draft, Jayden Quaintance continues to impress, landing at No. 15 overall with the Chicago Bulls. No other current Wildcats made the list, though former Kentucky center Ugonna Onyenso—who finished at Virginia—was projected to go 50th to the Toronto Raptors.
For now, it’s too early for Kentucky fans to worry about losing Moreno.
The upcoming pre-draft process, particularly the NBA Combine in Chicago from May 10–17, will play a major role in shaping his final decision.
Until then, Moreno’s situation remains one to watch closely as he weighs immediate opportunity against long-term upside.
