There’s really no way to soften it—Tyran Stokes’ decision day turned into a tough moment for Mark Pope and the Kentucky basketball program.
Going into Tuesday night, the momentum had already shifted heavily toward Kansas. With Stokes set to announce live during ESPN’s NBA Tip-Off, most around the sport expected the Jayhawks to land the No. 1 recruit. When he ultimately chose Kansas, it didn’t come as a shock.
What stood out instead was how Kentucky’s staff handled the situation publicly.
Mark Pope drew attention after liking a tweet that hyped up the possibility of him landing Stokes. While it may seem minor, it created unnecessary excitement among fans at a time when Kentucky didn’t appear to be in the lead. At best, it built false hope. At worst, it risked taking away from the player’s moment if things had gone differently.
Then came a bigger issue.
Assistant coach Mo Williams replied publicly to Stokes’ announcement post—something that was quickly deleted. Beyond the awkward optics, that kind of interaction with an uncommitted recruit can raise NCAA compliance concerns. It only added more criticism to a situation that was already drawing negative attention.
But the most revealing part came from reports suggesting Stokes had already solidified his decision with Kansas well before the announcement—possibly even during the same window he visited Kentucky in April. If that’s accurate, it raises questions about Kentucky’s strategy. While Kansas appeared to quietly secure the commitment, Kentucky continued to push hard, potentially missing out on other key opportunities in the transfer portal.
And that’s where the frustration really builds.
This isn’t an isolated situation. Kentucky has now had multiple instances of going all-in on elite targets, only to come up short while other options slip away. If the staff had a clearer read on Stokes’ direction earlier, shifting focus could have helped avoid another setback.
In the end, it wasn’t just about losing out on a top recruit—it’s what may have happened before the announcement that’s now getting the most attention.
