Pat Kelsey and Mark Pope entered the Bluegrass basketball spotlight around the same time, and since then, their paths have become closely linked. With both coaches tasked with rebuilding their respective programs, comparisons were inevitable. Now, that rivalry is no longer limited to the court—it has fully spilled into the transfer portal, where Louisville appears to be gaining early control.
Louisville Starting to Separate Itself
While their coaching resumes may still be viewed in parallel, Louisville has started to build noticeable momentum in roster construction this offseason. The Cardinals have already secured commitments from Dayton point guard De’Shayne Montgomery and USC center Gabe Dynes—both of whom were also priority targets for Kentucky. Dynes, a Kentucky native, stood out as a particularly important recruiting miss for the Wildcats.
These additions have strengthened the perception that Pat Kelsey is currently outpacing Mark Pope in this cycle, especially when evaluating overall roster balance and talent acquisition.
A Clear Contrast in Roster Building
A closer look at the projected starting lineups for both programs highlights the gap that Kentucky is still working to close.
Kentucky’s projected lineup:
Zoom Diallo (PG)
Alex Wilkins (SG)
Kam Williams (SF)
Ousmane N’Diaye (PF)
Malachi Moreno (C)
The Wildcats are still actively pursuing additional pieces, particularly in the frontcourt and backcourt rotation. Key targets include Justin McBride, Joson Sanon, and Jerone Morton. On the high school side, Kentucky remains involved with elite prospects such as Tyran Stokes, Miikka Muurinen, and Sayon Keita.
Still, concerns remain about perimeter scoring and overall depth if remaining targets do not commit.
Louisville’s projected lineup:
Jackson Shelstad
Adrian Wooley
Karter Knox
Alvaro Folgueiras
Flory Bidunga
Louisville’s group currently looks more complete, with Flory Bidunga standing out as the centerpiece addition. The five-star transfer is regarded as one of the most impactful frontcourt players in the portal, immediately raising the Cardinals’ ceiling.
The Tyran Stokes Factor
Despite Louisville’s current advantage, the entire dynamic of this rivalry could still shift based on one major decision: Tyran Stokes.
The five-star forward has long been considered a priority target for Kansas and Bill Self, but Kentucky remains firmly in the race. In many ways, Stokes represents the centerpiece of Mark Pope’s recruiting efforts at this stage.
If Kentucky lands Stokes, it could dramatically alter perceptions and instantly narrow the gap between the two programs. His presence would be a potential game-changer for the Wildcats.
If not, Kentucky could find itself trailing Louisville’s momentum in the transfer portal as the offseason continues, with limited time left to match the Cardinals’ roster strength before the season begins.
