The recruiting battle between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks for five-star prospect Tyran Stokes continues to heat up as April comes to a close.
Despite the transfer portal being active and roster movement happening across college basketball, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2026 still has not announced where he will play his lone college season. While the Oregon Ducks have made a strong late push, the race is still believed to come down mainly to Kentucky and Kansas.
Mark Pope and Kentucky’s coaching staff are doing everything possible to bring Stokes to Lexington, and one recent move may be especially important.
Kentucky reportedly offered former NBA star Jamal Crawford a role on the coaching staff, a decision that appears closely connected to Stokes’ recruitment. Crawford served as an assistant coach this past season at Rainier Beach High School, where Stokes played during his senior year.
Crawford is one of the most successful NBA players to come out of Rainier Beach. After spending one season at University of Michigan, he went on to enjoy a professional career that lasted more than two decades in the NBA.
This past season, Crawford returned to his alma mater to help coach alongside the program where his son, JJ Crawford, currently plays. During that time, he developed a strong relationship with Stokes, giving the elite recruit a trusted mentor with deep basketball experience and NBA credibility.
Kentucky had previously hosted Stokes for an unexpected visit to Lexington earlier this month, but Mark Pope was unable to secure a commitment at that time. Now, bringing in someone from Stokes’ high school circle could be another major attempt to tip the scales in Kentucky’s favor.
Kansas, led by Bill Self, may not have the same direct personal ties in this recruitment, but the Jayhawks remain firmly in the picture. Many still view Kansas as the team to beat, and predictions from recruiting analysts continue to lean in their direction.
Kentucky does have several advantages, including Stokes’ Louisville roots, strong NIL opportunities, and its apparel connection with Nike. Adding Jamal Crawford to the staff would only strengthen that position.
For now, the battle remains wide open. Kentucky is making one final aggressive push, but Kansas still appears to hold its place as the frontrunner until Stokes makes his final decision.
