A full-circle moment unfolded this week on the University of Kentucky campus as freshman forward Braydon Hawthorne officially moved in to begin training with the Wildcats basketball team. The young athlete took a moment to celebrate the milestone in a touching and symbolic way — by recreating a cherished childhood photo.
Years ago, a young Braydon posed beside the statue of legendary Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall, located on campus. That childhood photo captured the dreams of a boy who admired the legacy of UK basketball. Now, as a member of the storied program, Hawthorne returned to the same spot to replicate the image — but this time as an official Wildcat.
The side-by-side comparison of the photos, labeled “How it started vs How it’s going,” has captured the hearts of Big Blue Nation (#BBN), symbolizing the realization of a dream years in the making.
As conditioning and team practices kick off this month, Hawthorne’s journey from fan to player reflects the deep connection between Kentucky basketball and its community — a tradition that continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.
