A blanket of fog had descended on the UK on Thursday afternoon, with games up and down the country affected. Ahead of the game, Liverpool had released a statement – urging fans to arrive at the stadium earlier than usual.
The Met Office had warned the fog wouldn’t lift for the clash either: “Remaining cloudy this evening and overnight with patchy rain and drizzle, especially over higher ground.
“Turning foggy in places with generally murky conditions for many. Staying frost-free with light winds across the region. Minimum temperature 4 °C.”
And the reason the game wasn’t called off comes down to one clear FA law. In the pitch inspection guide, it reads: “Fog creates its’ own problems. Use perspectives from ground level and the back of a stand – check forecast (remember that there is a responsibility to paying spectators).”
“Fog is increasingly getting worse. Game should be abandoned any second now,” a second predicted. While a third posted: “As a Liverpool fan, that was a tough watch, and I’m not talking about the fog!”
“Not even the fog has provided enough cover from this display. Liverpool doing their best to flatter Leicester. Just not good enough,” a fourth shared. And another added: “Could see this performance/result coming a mile away even in this fog…”
Just across the River Mersey, Tranmere Rovers had to put their clash with Accrington Stanley on ice thanks to the thick fog.

Depsite the game being declared OK to go ahead, it didn’t stop fans on social media moaning about the thickness of the fog. One fan sighed: “This fog is annoying me. I’m squinting at the TV!”
