Virgil van Dijk has steered clear of early speculation about a potential ‘Quadruple’, unlike his Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold last season.
When asked if he believed Arne Slot’s team could clinch all four major trophies, following their 6-3 demolition of Tottenham, Van Dijk refused to look beyond their next match against Leicester City on Boxing Day.
The Reds were widely tipped for the Quadruple during the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons, as well as the previous term. Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool did manage to win the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and two League Cups over those seasons.
Last season, when Liverpool were excelling in all domestic competitions and the Europa League, Alexander-Arnold boldly declared his personal goal to win all four honours. While his ambition was commendable, his words came back to bite him, as the Reds had to settle for just the League Cup. They finished third in the Premier League and were knocked out by Manchester United and Atalanta in the FA Cup and Europa League respectively.
Perhaps having looked back on those seasons, Van Dijk did not indulge any talk of a Quadruple this time round. Speaking to Sky Sports about the possibility of winning all four trophies, Van Dijk said: “I think I’ve given answers already, many times, that we don’t think what’s out there in May.
“We want to be out there in May, but we’ve seen how difficult it is. Other teams can do it apart from obviously City. But we focus on what’s next ahead of us. That’s the only thing. I’m not getting dragged into any conversation about potentially winning a trophy, or two, or three or four.
