Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi is now coming to terms with the ideal of leaving Real Sociedad, it has been claimed. The 25-year-old was linked with a move to the Reds during the summer transfer window, but he ended up staying at his boyhood club in Spain.
Arne Slot’s side were searching for a new midfielder and Zubimendi was the man they wanted. He has been with Sociedad since the age of 12 and has made over 200 first-team appearances for the Basque outfit. Alongside Liverpool, Manchester City were also interested in a move but he chose to stay at Sociedad.
But now, according to The Athletic, it’s anticipated that Zubimendi will leave Sociedad next summer. The Spaniard has realised that he might have to depart the La Liga side, sparking discussion of where he could go to.
Liverpool and Arsenal have been long-term admirers of the player, while City are lining up a potential move in January as they look for a replacement to Rodri, who is expected to miss the season through injury. However, if an exit is to materialise it’s claimed that would more likely occur next summer.
Speaking about his future in November, Zubimendi admitted he is expecting speculation around his future. “There will always be rumours and now that January is approaching, there will be too, but I don’t waste energy on outside noise. I’m happy with the way I’m handling it and I’m going to handle it,” he told Estadio Deportivo.
Liverpool chose against signing a central midfielder altogether in the summer and that decision has appeared to have paid off, with Ryan Gravenberch impressing after being handed a chance under Slot.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister have seemed to share the other responsibilities in the middle of the park.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool opt to sign a midfielder either in January or in the summer, but the situation in that area of the pitch is much rosier than what it is when Jurgen Klopp left. The Reds have looked in far more control in midfield and Slot has to take a lot of credit for that change.
