In an exclusive interview, Chelsea star Mason Mount has revealed that he was once rejected by Liverpool due to his small stature.
Mount, who has become a key player for Chelsea and the English national team, said that he was told by Liverpool scouts that he was too small to play in the Premier League.
“I was only about 5’2″ at the time, and I remember the Liverpool scouts telling me that I wasn’t big enough to play in the Premier League,” Mount said. “It was tough to hear, but it just made me more determined to prove them wrong.”
And prove them wrong he did. Mount went on to join Chelsea’s academy and worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming a regular starter for the Blues.
“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to play for Chelsea,” Mount said. “But I have to say, it’s nice to have proven Liverpool wrong. Maybe they should have given me a chance!”
Mount’s success has also earned him a call-up to the English national team, where he has become a key player under manager Gareth Southgate.
“Mason is a fantastic player, and he’s proven himself to be one of the best in the Premier League,” Southgate said. “He’s got a great attitude and a lot of talent, and I’m glad we’ve got him in our squad.”
As for Liverpool, they may be regretting their decision to pass on Mount. The Reds have struggled to find consistency in midfield, and Mount’s skills and work rate would have been a valuable asset.
But for Mount, he’s just happy to have proven his doubters wrong and to be living his dream as a Chelsea player.
“I’m just grateful for the opportunity to play for Chelsea and to represent my country,” Mount said. “I’m loving every minute of it, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
