Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo were both replaced as the Liverpool duo suffered a disappointing end to their international break. With Virgil van Dijk absent through suspension, Gravenberch and Gakpo started in Holland’s 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Germany on Monday night.
Gakpo, though, was substituted immediately after Germany’s Jamie Leweling netted the 64th-minute winner while Gravenberch was given the hook by Holland boss Ronald Koeman with 10 minutes remaining.
In the same UEFA Nations League group, Dominik Szoboszlai scored twice for Hungary in their 2-0 win in Bosnia, while elsewhere Ibrahima Konate continued his good form with a second successive start for France in their 2-1 triumph in Belgium.
Lewis Koumas and Owen Beck, on loan at Championship sides Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers respectively, were unused substitutes as Wales beat Montenegro 1-0 with a penalty from former Liverpool Academy graduate Harry Wilson.
Japan skipper Wataru Endo was absent from his country’s World Cup qualifier against Australia on Tuesday having missed training the previous day through illness.
Liverpool will wait to discover the extent of the sickness on the midfielder’s return to Merseyside, with Darwin Nunez and Caoimhin Kelleher having recently been forced to sit out games through illness.
