Chelsea captain Reece James has made his return to first-team training as he steps up his recovery from injury, offering a huge boost to Blues boss Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea captain Reece James has returned to first-team training after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury. The right-back has yet to feature under new head coach Enzo Maresca, but his return to training is a significant step forward.
James has had a difficult couple of years, playing just under 800 minutes in the last 18 months due to multiple injuries. The Cobham academy graduate’s involvement for the West Londoners has been limited as a result.
He seemed to be on the mend and even made a comeback during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in America. However, another hamstring issue set him back, with his last competitive game dating back to May.
While it’s still uncertain when the 24 year old will return to the first team, Chelsea are unlikely to rush him back into action. They’re keen to avoid any further injury spells.
Nonetheless, images of James back in training, shared by the club on Monday afternoon, have given fans a much-needed boost, reports football.london, and the player himself responded to a social media post with a clock emoji hinting his return will be made soon.
“The only one [missing] is Reece. He is still out, and there is no real update on him at the moment,” Maresca said back in September.
He previously stated: “His injury is a bit delayed, and the most important thing for him – for any injury – is the player comes back when they are 100 per cent fit.”
In the absence of their captain, Chelsea have seen Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah step up to fill the void. The Blues are preparing for a crucial period in the Premier League, Carabao Cup and European competitions with several important fixtures looming.
The London side will be back in Premier League action this Sunday, aiming to pose the biggest challenge yet for Arne Slot since his appointment as Liverpool’s head coach.
