Latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip as former Reds captain Jordan Henderson is being linked with a return to English football.
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is being linked with a surprise move back to English football. Henderson left the Reds in the summer of 2023 to move to Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq in a deal worth £12 million.
Henderson made just 19 appearances for the Saudi Pro League club, who are managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, before leaving to join Ajax in January this year. The 34-year-old has since featured 24 times for the Eredivisie giants, but is already being linked with a return to England.
According to Football Insider, Sunderland are showing an interest in signing Henderson. The midfielder left the Stadium of Light in 2011 to sign for Liverpool in a deal worth £16 million after graduating from the club’s academy on Wearside.
The report claims that Sunderland are exploring the possibility of signing Henderson when the transfer window opens in January. The Black Cats are chasing promotion to the Premier League and are currently at the top of the Championship table, level on points with second-placed Sheffield United.
It has also been suggested that Ajax would not prevent Henderson from rejoining his boyhood club should he express a desire to leave Amsterdam. Should a deal go through, it has been reported that it would likely be a permanent deal that runs until the end of the season, with the possibility of being extended into the 2025/26 campaign.
Should Henderson move to Sunderland then it could present the opportunity of a future reunion with Liverpool. The Reds could draw the Championship club in the FA Cup from January onwards, and if promotion is achieved then there could be two more reunions next season in the Premier League.
