Reds supporters had headed into the off-season hoping that their club would make the moves needed to build on a decent final campaign under Jurgen Klopp.
However, despite a clear need for a new midfielder, Liverpool chose to hold off instead, signing only Federico Chiesa for a low fee and securing Giorgi Mamardashvili for a 2025 move.
Liverpool did try to sign Martin Zubimendi, but the Spaniard could not bring himself to leave boyhood club Real Sociedad.
With La Real suffering a poor start to the season, rumours are abound that Liverpool could come back for Zubimendi in 2025.
And next summer could seemingly be a big one for the Reds. Along with Mamardashvili and potentially Zubimendi, there seems to be a chance that Liverpool also look to bring in Xavi Simons.
Xavi Simons set for 2025 transfer
In Liverpool terms, a move for Simons would not really make a lot of sense. Harvey Elliott is a very similar player to the Dutchman, so it does not seem like an especially pressing move for Liverpool to make.
Nevertheless, journalist Yvonne Gabriel told the FC Bayern Insider podcast recently that Simons was very much on the radar at Anfield and has impressed Arne Slot.
“Liverpool were also extremely keen on him this summer, there is a good connection to coach Arne Slot,” said Gabriel, while also claiming the 21-year-old has a price-tag of around £67m.
However, taking to his Daily Briefing on Friday morning, Romano insisted that nothing had been agreed with Liverpool over Simons, but did say that the player – who is on-loan from PSG at RB Leipzig – is likely to move next summer.
“One of the players being considered around Europe in the summer was, for sure, Xavi Simons,” says Romano. “He’s always been in the media and there have always been rumours.
“I always told you “Leipzig, Leipzig, Leipzig” in the summer because they were pushing, and in the end the player decided to continue in Germany to give Leipzig an opportunity to win titles.
“In summer 25 he will formally return to PSG but remember this; the expectation is still for Xavi Simons to try something different,” he adds.
“It’d be a pure guess job at the moment as no club has planned anything for him but, for sure, top clubs will keep monitoring his progress at Leipzig.
“I’m sure there’s a good chance for Xavi to leave PSG on a permanent transfer in 2025, but it’s not something already agreed with Liverpool or any other club.”
Liverpool should have other priorities than Simons
Simons is a very good player, let’s be clear about that. At just 21 he already has 130 senior appearances to his name.
However, the former PSV Eindhoven loanee could hardly be more similar to Elliott if he tried.
Born on the 21st of April 2003, Simons is practically the Dutch carbon copy of Liverpool’s No.19. Elliott was born exactly 17 days earlier.
Both diminutive, tricky and full of talent, there is no room for Simons and Elliott in the same squad, especially not for the kind of fee being spoken about.
With a top defensive midfielder and a new centre-back still on the agenda for Liverpool, a move for someone like Simons should be nothing like a priority.
