Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has revealed he received a text from Jurgen Klopp ahead of Euro 2024, having broken a record for Scotland in the build-up.
Robertson is set to lead his country out in the opening game of the tournament tomorrow as the Scots take on Germany in Munich. They’ll be aiming to upset the home supporters and make the perfect start in Group A, with Hungary and Switzerland also vying for a place in the knockout stages.
Robertson heads into the tournament having broken the record for the most games as Scotland captain. The left-back donned the armband for the 49th time last week in a warm-up game against Finland.
And the 30-year-old received a special message from his former manager ahead of tomorrow’s game, although Robertson will be aiming to disappoint Klopp against his home nation.
“He text me last week when I broke the record but that was it, all he said was congratulations,” Robertson said during a pre-match press conference. “It’ll be interesting to see who he supports tomorrow – there’s only one answer for that – but I don’t need any advice from him. Hopefully he can enjoy the game but not too much.”
Robertson also played down fears over his fitness ahead of the tournament opener. He was seen leaving Scotland’s first training session in Germany early after seemingly picking up a knock.
“Physically good, mentally good, looking forward to what’s ahead,” Robertson added. “I had an ankle injury from March and I’ve been nursing it a little bit from then on.
“It’s all good now, we were pretty relaxed about the whole situation but I’m all good to go. Mentally, physically we’re all ready and come kick-off we’ll be 100 per cent.”
