Paul Ince has admitted he realised Liverpool did not have the mentality to replicate Manchester United’s success quickly after making a controversial cross to Anfield.
The 53-year-old, who is one of a handful of gamers to flip out for each United and Liverpool in the Premier League era, joined Roy Evans’ aspect from Inter Milan in 1997, two years after he used to be offered to the Italian giants by means of United.
Ince failed to win any silverware for the duration of his two seasons at Anfield and was bought to Middlesbrough in 1999 with the aid of manager Gerard Houllier. However, the 53-cap England worldwide believes it was the Reds’ mentality that stifled their success in the late ’90s no matter boasting abilities like Robbie Fowler, Jamie Redknapp, Michael Owen and David James.
“It used to be different,” Ince said on talkSPORT when requested whether or not the weight of expectation used to be higher at United or Liverpool. “I always felt the expectation at Manchester United was once to win, like it is now. When you go to Manchester United you’re anticipated to win and win and win. Not to say that wasn’t the case at Liverpool.
“The difference when I went to Liverpool used to be that the players did not have the mentality to favor to win the title. Listen, we had a very, very accurate side; Fowler, McManaman, Redknapp, Patrik Berger, okay. But we didn’t have the mentality and desire to do what it took to win a title. And that used to be the only distinction between the two clubs.”
Asked if the failure to win a league title all through his career at Anfield still damage him, Ince, who managed a 1/3 and seventh-place finish in his two seasons at the club, replied: “It does. It really, absolutely does. We had some super players. I do not compare the two golf equipment as clubs, I evaluate the times I went into each membership and the players’ mentality and mindset to attempt and do something.
“I loved each my times at both those clubs.”
