For most Liverpool players, this season has been one of vast improvement and general success.
After a disappointing campaign last year, there were big question marks over a number of the squad. But by and large, the Reds have answered those emphatically.
This has undoubtedly been helped by the influx of energy brought by four new signings over the summer. Liverpool are said to be privately delighted by the addition of Alexis Mac Allister in particular, while Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai have been excellent, too.
The final one of those signings – Ryan Gravenberch – has taken a little more time to get properly going. Even now, only recently back from injury, Gravenberch still hasn’t found his rhythm.
Although Liverpool are reportedly convinced that the 21-year-old can reach the highest level, some will be less convinced. One who that seemingly applies to is former Reds goalkeeper Sander Westerveld, who has spoken about his countryman’s form.
Sander Westerveld rates Liverpool stars
Westerveld was only briefly at Liverpool – staying for two seasons between 1999 and 2001. Nevertheless, the Dutchman had a big influence with the Reds, winning five different trophies as the starting goalie.
As a result, his input is welcome, especially when it comes to assessing the trio of Dutch stars now at the club. And that’s exactly what he did while speaking to Netherlands based outlet Soccer News this week.
Asked about the form of Gravenberch – as well as the slightly underperforming Cody Gakpo – Westerveld suggested that the pair need to do a little more. After a bright start to their Liverpool careers, both Gravenberch and Gakpo have dropped off.
“Gravenberch started very well and everyone was immediately very enthusiastic,” said the pundit. “After that, it got a little hit and miss.
“The same applies to Gakpo. If I had to give him a grade, I think I’d choose a 7. It’s a good pass. For both, things are looking good for the future.”
More needed from Gravenberch and Gakpo
This is a very fair assessment from Westerveld. However, we’d possibly suggest that a rating of 7 for both players is a little on the high side.
Gakpo in particular needs to start to show far more in a Liverpool shirt. The 24-year-old’s cameo at Brighton on Sunday suggested that even Jurgen Klopp is starting to lose a little bit of trust in him.
Having gone off the boil too much over recent times, Gakpo has even drawn criticism from Reds legend Jamie Carragher. While some will feel Carragher was wide of the mark, we’d perhaps be minded to agree with him. Come on, Cody!
As for Gravenberch, he gets more of a pass from us. Not yet 22, the midfielder is still a very young player and after a year of barely playing for Bayern Munich was always likely to take time to adapt. Having said that, he needs to show exactly why Liverpool have such belief in his when he returns fully from injury. Hit and miss indeed.
