This season, Díaz has looked a little bit off the pace with injuries, and some have wondered if the Reds would be better off cashing in on the wide playmaker for a more reliable goal-scorer.
Liverpool are in the thick of an incredibly tough title race with Manchester City and Arsenal, and having fallen agonizingly short in 2021/22 before a huge letdown season in 2022/23, the Reds are desperate to finish Jürgen Klopp‘s final season at the helm in glorious fashion.
Díaz will need to play a key role in that effort, so it’s a good thing he showed a glimpse of the sheer extent of his attacking quality with a world-class assist for Colombia in their international friendly matchup against Spain.
That is the Luis Díaz Liverpool fans know and love. That is the version of Díaz that lit up Copa América as the quiet breakout star and actual best player of the Lionel Messi and Neymar narrative-driven tournament.
Díaz then went on to light up the Premier League and Champions League in that exact fashion. The version of Díaz fans have seen in 2023/24 isn’t quite this one, so it is a welcome sight to see him back during international duty.
Just look at those dribbling skills. Díaz’s work rate is elite, and he is so good at setting up teammates after putting in the effort to unbalance the defender from a wide position.
If Díaz can keep this up, he can be exactly the weapon across from Premier League Player of the Season favorite Mohamed Salah that he is supposed to be.
Liverpool are a much, much better side when their Colombian left winger is in the mood, and more plays like that for the Reds could give them the edge they need in this razor-thin title race.
