Liverpool will return from the international break into the home stretch of their season with two competitions to play for having already won one in the League Cup.
The Europa League draw on Friday means a winnable two-legged tie with Atalanta before a semi-final showdown with either Benfica or Marseille. The path has really opened up to the Dublin final now and what a party that will be if they can get to the Aviva Stadium in May.
In the Premier League, Liverpool just have to take each game as it comes. It’s a bit of a cliche but every match is now a cup final for the Reds. It might be a bit out of our hands given Arsenal are top of the table but their visit to Manchester City on Easter Sunday could have a huge say on what happens now.
Liverpool just have to host Brighton earlier in the day with the right attitude and mentality and hopefully one or two more back from injury. It’s a huge game on March 31 and probably the biggest in the league since they were going toe-to-toe with City for the title in 2022.
The FA Cup exit to Manchester United hurt but the Premier League remains the bread and butter. It’s what Liverpool used to bring home almost every year and what a way to end Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club it would be if they can secure a 20th crown this year. The fans are right behind them for the next 10 games and it is going to be so exciting to witness.
On the pitch, though, I am sure Liverpool won’t be doing too much differently. They have got into this position by playing a certain way with a particular style and they won’t be changing anything up too drastically at such a late stage in the season. All they have to worry about for now is taking care of business against Brighton and then it is over to the Etihad to see what happens with Arsenal and City. Klopp just needs to keep going and see where it leads.
Legends game promises to be another brilliant day
I can’t wait to take part in the legends’ game this weekend when Ajax come to Anfield.
These occasions are always brilliant and it is amazing to see they have already sold 50,000 tickets for the match. The fact it is nearly a sell-out tells you all about the quality of Liverpool supporters.
The game itself is going to be competitive, there’s no doubt about that. Alongside myself, we’ve got John Barnes and Ian Rush helping out but it will be a special day for Sven Goran-Eriksson as he leads the team out at Anfield to fulfil a lifelong dream just months after he told the world of his sad terminal cancer diagnosis.
On the pitch, it will be great to see Steven Gerrard back in a Liverpool shirt and playing a part. Plenty of fans will be keen to see Stevie G back in action and it is going to be a fantastic day.
