Liverpool vs Manchester City has been one of the most hotly anticipated games over recent years.
With quite possibly the two best managers in the world going head-to-head, there has also often been plenty riding on each fixture. What’s not to love. As far as Sunday’s game goes, it didn’t disappoint.
If anyone were in any doubt of the appeal of this particular match, they need only look at PSG manager Luis Enrique’s comments on it.
A Champions League winning manager currently leading one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Enrique no doubt has plenty on his plate already. But as per his comments via parisfans.fr this week, the Spanish coach still took time out to watch the game at Anfield.
“I saw it, it was a very high level match with unique coaches,” Enrique praised, before sharing his views on how the level compared to the French top division. “What I can give is a reflection on what I think Ligue 1 is. When I didn’t know her, I thought it was a bit of an easy championship. But it’s the opposite, there is a very high level in the players and the coach.
“I’m not saying it because I’m there, there’s really a high level of competitiveness. A lot of players go abroad afterwards.”
Enrique enjoys Liverpool game
It perhaps shouldn’t be a surprise that manager’s of the continent’s top clubs were tuning in to see Liverpool on Sunday.
Of course, they weren’t just watching the Reds. City in their own right are always worth a viewing with Pep Guardiola at the helm.
Whether you’re a new manager starting out or a seasoned pro like Enrique, there’s always something you can learn from our Jurgen.
Liverpool 1-1 Man City
Liverpool will still clearly be worth watching for anybody who loves football when the German leaves this summer. The squad is packed with talent and the Reds will always be one of the biggest clubs in the world, whoever is in charge.
But it certainly won’t be the same. Whether it’s Xabi Alonso or somebody else, the number of eyeballs following Liverpool will drop.
In the bigger picture, perhaps that means little. But let’s be honest, it’s been nice knowing that with Klopp around, Liverpool have possibly been the envy of coaches like Enrique.
That isn’t to say we won’t be again. However, Enrique’s words maybe serve yet more notice that a special era is coming to a close. This fixture just won’t be the same next year.
