The Kentucky Wildcats are entering the 2026–27 college basketball season with a different level of optimism, and head coach Mark Pope may have finally addressed one of the biggest problems that held his team back last season.
After an inconsistent campaign that exposed several weaknesses, Pope made significant changes to his roster, particularly in the backcourt. So far, the early results have been encouraging. Kentucky finished its exhibition schedule with an undefeated 3-0 record, defeating Little Rock, Texas Tech, and UCF.
While exhibition victories do not guarantee regular-season success, the performances have provided an early indication that this Wildcats team could be heading in the right direction.
One of Kentucky’s biggest concerns last season was the lack of consistent playmaking and reliable backcourt production. Pope appears to have made that a priority by bringing in Washington transfer Zoom Diallo and Furman transfer Alex Wilkins.
Both guards bring different qualities to the floor, including ball-handling, scoring ability, and the potential to create opportunities for their teammates. Their presence gives Kentucky more options offensively and should help take some pressure off individual players.
Another significant addition is Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic, whose exceptional perimeter shooting could become one of Kentucky’s biggest weapons. His ability to knock down three-pointers forces opposing defenses to stretch the floor, creating more room for Kentucky’s guards and frontcourt players.
The frontcourt also has reasons for optimism. Sophomore center Malachi Moreno has undergone a major physical transformation and is expected to play an important role on both ends of the floor. His development could give Pope the defensive presence and interior consistency Kentucky needs.
However, the exhibition performances have not been completely flawless.
Turnovers and offensive chemistry remain concerns, particularly as several new players continue adjusting to Pope’s fast-paced system. Kentucky’s 90-76 overtime victory over UCF showed both the team’s potential and some of the issues that still need attention.
Health will also be important. Kam Williams’ availability and Trent Noah’s lingering hamstring concerns could influence how quickly the Wildcats establish a consistent rotation.
Nevertheless, Kentucky’s undefeated exhibition run has created positive momentum heading into the regular season.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 23 in both the AP and Coaches preseason polls and have been projected to finish seventh in the SEC. Those expectations leave plenty of room for Pope’s team to surprise people.
The real challenge begins against Manhattan, when the results finally count.
Pope has made important roster changes, addressed several weaknesses, and given Kentucky fans reasons to believe this season could be different. Now, he must prove that the improvements seen in exhibition play can translate into consistent success throughout the regular season.
