Big Blue Nation finally got its first real look at Mark Pope’s 2026-27 Kentucky Wildcats, and Big Blue Madness gave fans plenty to talk about heading into the new season.
A sold-out Rupp Arena provided the perfect setting as Kentucky’s men’s and women’s teams took the stage Friday night. The energy inside the building was unmistakable, but one Wildcat quickly emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the evening.
Alex Wilkins stole the spotlight with an impressive shooting performance that showcased exactly why Kentucky believes he can become an important piece of this roster.
The three-point competition provided one of the clearest glimpses of Kentucky’s offensive potential. Mason Williams opened with 24 points before Wilkins caught fire and produced a remarkable 31-point performance.
Milan Momcilovic followed with 22 points, while reigning champion Trent Noah finished with 18.
Wilkins wasn’t finished.
In the final round, he delivered another strong performance with 21 points to defeat Ousmane N’Diaye. He then added a little flair to the finish, dunking his final ball as the crowd erupted.
For a player entering a new season with plenty to prove, it was an early statement.
Pope has repeatedly praised the shooting ability throughout his roster, and Friday night offered Kentucky fans a glimpse of what that could look like when the games begin. With multiple players capable of stretching defenses, the Wildcats could have plenty of options offensively.
There were plenty of other memorable moments.
Momcilovic helped a fan win $10,000 by calmly making a half-court shot after the fan selected him to take the attempt. Meanwhile, Justin McBride and N’Diaye put on a show in the dunk contest, displaying the athleticism Kentucky hopes will translate to the court.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night came before the current Wildcats even took the floor.
Pope welcomed former Kentucky star Karl-Anthony Towns back to Rupp Arena. Towns, who was part of Kentucky’s 2014-15 team before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, received a massive ovation from the crowd after recently winning an NBA championship with the New York Knicks.
But the focus ultimately returned to Pope’s new team.
Big Blue Madness wasn’t a game, and the Wildcats still have plenty to prove once the regular season begins. However, Kentucky fans finally got an opportunity to see the personalities, shooting ability and athleticism that make this roster intriguing.
And if Wilkins’ performance was any indication, Pope may have another player ready to make a much bigger impact than many expected.
Big Blue Nation won’t have to wait much longer to find out if the excitement from Big Blue Madness carries over when the games actually count.
