Big Blue Nation is getting closer to seeing Mark Pope’s 2026-27 Kentucky Wildcats take the floor, and the Kentucky head coach has made it clear that there is plenty about this team that has caught his attention.
With Big Blue Madness approaching and the season opener just over a month away, excitement around the program continues to build. During Kentucky’s recent Media Day, Pope spoke about the areas of his roster that have impressed him most during the offseason.
One of the biggest themes has been creativity.
Pope has repeatedly emphasized the importance of having multiple players capable of creating offense, and he believes Kentucky has made significant progress in that area.
“We knew that we needed creators on the floor to play the way that we love to play this beautiful basketball that we love to play, and I think we’ve answered that well,” Pope said. “And I think our guys have grown since they’ve been here in that capacity. And we have it at all positions.”
That versatility extends throughout the lineup.
Pope pointed specifically to the backcourt combination of Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, noting that both players posted assist percentages above 30% at their previous schools. Freshman Mason Williams has also impressed the coaching staff with his ability to create.
Kentucky’s frontcourt is expected to contribute to that playmaking as well.
Pope explained that the Wildcats have spent considerable time working on offensive actions that allow their five-man to function as a creator rather than simply finishing plays around the basket.
Shooting is another area where Pope believes this team can make an impact.
“We think that our shooting is going to be elite,” Pope said. “We think that we shoot it really, really well, and we have a depth of shooters that’s important for us.”
The length of the roster is another component Pope highlighted.
But despite all those strengths, there is one particular aspect of Kentucky’s offense that has excited him the most.
It is the cutting.
“This is really fun,” Pope said. “Of all that, the thing I’ve been most excited about is our cutting, and you know that’s a major part of what we do. And our guys have bought into cutting hard, cutting hard, cutting hard. There’s so much movement on the floor for us right now.”
That movement could become a defining feature of Kentucky’s offense this season.
Pope believes the Wildcats have the pieces to be a very good team, but there are still areas that need improvement. Defense remains a major focus, while keeping the roster healthy will also be critical as the season approaches.
For now, though, Pope’s comments provide another glimpse into what Kentucky is trying to build — a team built around creators, shooting, length and constant movement.
And with Big Blue Madness nearly here, BBN is about to get its first real look at how it all comes together.
