Kentucky football gave Big Blue Nation plenty to celebrate Saturday, overcoming a slow start to defeat South Alabama 45-21 and produce another impressive offensive performance.
The biggest talking point coming out of the victory was Kentucky’s rushing attack.
C.J. Baxter, Jason Patterson and Jovantae Barnes combined to give the Wildcats an explosive performance on the ground. All three running backs reached at least 100 rushing yards, marking the first time Kentucky had accomplished that feat since 2020.
Baxter led Kentucky with 149 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Patterson added 137 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, including a spectacular 75-yard touchdown run. Barnes contributed 100 yards and another touchdown on just eight carries.
Together, the trio gave Kentucky the balance and explosiveness it needed after South Alabama jumped out to a 21-14 lead.
Kentucky responded with 10 unanswered points before halftime to take a 24-21 advantage into the locker room. The Wildcats then continued to build on that momentum after the break, eventually turning the game into a 24-point victory.
For BBN, the performance offered plenty of reasons to be encouraged about the offense.
Kentucky showed that it has multiple players capable of making big plays out of the backfield, while the offensive line provided opportunities for those backs to attack open space. Patterson’s long touchdown run was particularly important in changing the momentum before halftime.
The performance also takes some pressure off quarterback Kenny Minchey. While Kentucky will need more consistency from its passing attack as the competition gets tougher, an effective ground game gives the Wildcats another way to control games.
Still, Saturday’s performance should not completely overshadow the areas Kentucky needs to improve. Allowing South Alabama to score 21 points before halftime showed that the Wildcats have work to do, particularly as they prepare for another SEC matchup.
Kentucky will now turn its attention to South Carolina.
The Wildcats will hope the rushing attack can remain productive while the passing game continues to develop. If Baxter, Patterson and Barnes can continue creating explosive plays, Kentucky will have another important weapon to rely on moving forward.
For now, though, BBN has one major thing to talk about: Kentucky’s running game just delivered one of its most impressive performances in years.
