The wait is over for Kentucky basketball.
Mark Pope and the Wildcats officially began practice for the 2026-27 season on Tuesday, giving Big Blue Nation its first major look at the team as preparations for the new campaign move into another phase.
There is plenty of excitement surrounding Pope’s third season in Lexington, but the start of practice also brings an important reminder: the work is just beginning.
With a new-look roster featuring several talented additions, Pope has the difficult task of bringing the group together and establishing the identity Kentucky will carry into the season. The Wildcats have high expectations, and every practice will matter as players compete for roles and build chemistry.
One of the biggest developments from the opening practice was the return of Milan Momcilovic to the floor.
The sharpshooting Iowa State transfer had recently dealt with a jammed finger on his shooting hand, creating some concern among Kentucky fans. However, Momcilovic was seen getting shots up during Tuesday’s practice while still wearing a protective splint.
That development provided a welcome boost for a Kentucky team that expects Momcilovic to play a major role offensively.
The twist, however, is that opening practice is not simply about putting the ball in the basket.
Pope and his staff now have the opportunity to see how the pieces fit together when the intensity increases. Kentucky has added significant talent, but translating individual ability into a cohesive team will be one of the biggest storylines throughout the preseason.
The Wildcats will have plenty of competition for minutes, and players will have to prove themselves every time they step onto the court.
That makes the beginning of official practice especially important.
Kentucky still has several weeks before its season opener against Manhattan on Nov. 3 at Rupp Arena. That gives Pope and his players time to develop their system, improve defensively, build chemistry and determine which combinations work best.
For Big Blue Nation, Tuesday marked more than just another practice.
It was the beginning of the next chapter.
And with Momcilovic back on the floor and the entire roster officially getting to work, Kentucky fans finally have a chance to see what this team can become.
