Kentucky basketball is officially entering the stretch where excitement surrounding the 2026-27 season begins to build, and the Wildcats now have an important date circled on their calendar.
The SEC and ACC have announced the complete schedule for the 2026 SEC/ACC Basketball Challenge, confirming that Mark Pope and Kentucky will travel to Charlottesville to face Virginia on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
The matchup is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on ESPN.
Kentucky enters the matchup ranked No. 19 in the preseason rankings, while Virginia is ranked No. 13. The Cavaliers are coming off an impressive 30-6 season, including a 15-3 record in ACC play, and are expected to compete near the top of the conference again.
Virginia returns several important contributors, including Thijs De Ridder, Sam Lewis and Chance Mallory, who were the team’s first-, third- and fifth-leading scorers last season.
That makes the December matchup an early opportunity for Pope’s Wildcats to test themselves against a highly ranked opponent away from home.
Adding even more intrigue is the latest analytical outlook on Kentucky’s roster.
EvanMiya’s preseason computer rankings have Kentucky No. 18 nationally, while sophomore center Malachi Moreno is ranked No. 11 among individual players. Moreno owns a Bayesian Performance Rating of 8.48, making him one of the highest-rated players in the country according to the model.
Milan Momcilovic ranks No. 46 with a 6.52 BPR, while Zoom Diallo is No. 67 at 6.03. Those are the only three Kentucky players currently inside the top 100.
Alex Wilkins is ranked No. 608, although EvanMiya has previously explained that turnover issues at Furman negatively affected his projection and indicated that Wilkins could outperform the current ranking.
Kentucky’s No. 18 team ranking could also change depending on eligibility decisions surrounding fifth-year and international players across college basketball. Under one scenario outlined by EvanMiya, the Wildcats would rise to No. 12 nationally if those players were ruled ineligible.
For Pope and Kentucky, however, the numbers will eventually have to give way to what happens on the court.
The Wildcats now have a nationally televised December showdown with Virginia officially set, giving Big Blue Nation another major matchup to circle as the 2026-27 season approaches.
