Mark Mitchell’s decision to return to Missouri delivered a major blow to Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats, but Kentucky may already have an answer waiting in the wings.
With Mitchell officially out of the picture, Ousmane N’Diaye has suddenly become one of the most important players on Kentucky’s roster.
The Senegalese forward arrived in Lexington with plenty of intriguing tools after playing professional basketball in Italy. Now, with Mitchell no longer joining the Wildcats, N’Diaye could be asked to take on a much larger role than originally expected.
For Kentucky, his development could be critical.
N’Diaye is still adjusting to college basketball and learning Pope’s system, so there is naturally going to be a learning curve. But the potential is difficult to ignore.
At nearly seven feet tall, N’Diaye combines size, athleticism and an intriguing shooting ability that could make him a dangerous weapon in Kentucky’s offense.
A Chance to Step Into the Starting Lineup
With Mitchell gone, N’Diaye has a legitimate opportunity to become Kentucky’s starting power forward.
The other option would be moving Milan Momcilovic to the four and using Kam Williams at the three. However, that could affect Momcilovic’s ability to operate as a perimeter scoring threat.
Keeping Momcilovic in a role where he can maximize his shooting could make N’Diaye’s emergence even more valuable.
His Shooting Could Change Kentucky’s Offense
One of the biggest reasons for excitement surrounding N’Diaye is his confidence as a shooter.
A seven-footer who can stretch the floor creates problems for opposing defenses. In Pope’s system, that ability could open driving lanes for Kentucky’s guards while creating additional space for the Wildcats’ other offensive weapons.
But N’Diaye isn’t simply a shooter.
He is also an explosive athlete who can make impressive plays around the basket. His combination of size and athleticism gives Pope another intriguing piece to work with.
The Biggest Question Is Defense
There is still one major question surrounding N’Diaye: Can he handle the physicality of college basketball?
N’Diaye is on the thinner side for his size, and Kentucky will need him to compete against powerful forwards and big men throughout the season.
His length and athleticism can help, but he will have to become stronger and more comfortable defending in the paint.
That adjustment could determine just how effective he becomes.
Kentucky Needs N’Diaye to Deliver
The loss of Mark Mitchell changed Kentucky’s roster outlook, but it may have also created an opportunity for N’Diaye to emerge as one of the Wildcats’ biggest surprises.
If he can adjust quickly, shoot consistently and hold his own defensively, N’Diaye could give Kentucky something it desperately needs: a versatile frontcourt player capable of impacting the game in multiple ways.
Mark Mitchell may not be wearing Kentucky blue after all.
But if N’Diaye takes the next step, Mark Pope may have already found the answer.
