Kentucky basketball is already making moves in the 2029 recruiting class, and the Wildcats are turning their attention toward one of the most intriguing young prospects in the state.
Mark Pope and his coaching staff are set to host Ballard High School standout Mason Grivna for an unofficial visit to Lexington on Saturday, Sept. 12, according to 247Sports’ Travis Branham.
The timing could make for an exciting weekend in Lexington. Kentucky will host Alabama in football that weekend, and several high-level high school prospects are expected to be on campus, giving Grivna an opportunity to experience the atmosphere surrounding the Wildcats.
Grivna is still only a sophomore, so his recruitment remains in its early stages. The Louisville native currently isn’t ranked nationally because the 2029 recruiting cycle is still developing, but his offer sheet already shows that major programs are paying close attention.
The 6-foot-11, 220-pound center has reportedly received at least 15 scholarship offers, with programs such as Arizona State, Auburn, Indiana and Louisville already extending opportunities to him.
Interestingly, Kentucky has not yet offered Grivna. That could potentially change as the Wildcats get a closer look at him during his upcoming visit.
Kentucky isn’t the only major program pursuing the young big man. Grivna has several other visits scheduled as his recruitment continues to pick up steam. He is expected to visit Purdue on Sept. 26, South Carolina on Oct. 3, Louisville on Oct. 9, Indiana on Oct. 17 and Ohio State on Nov. 28.
With so much interest already surrounding him, Grivna could quickly become one of the more closely watched prospects in the 2029 class.
For Kentucky, the upcoming visit is about more than simply evaluating a talented in-state center. It gives Pope and his staff an opportunity to establish a relationship with Grivna well before his college decision becomes imminent.
Landing elite in-state talent has always carried extra significance for Kentucky, and the Wildcats appear interested in making sure they are involved early in Grivna’s recruitment.
Whether Kentucky ultimately extends an offer remains to be seen, but getting Grivna on campus is an important first step. If the Wildcats can make a strong impression during his visit, this could become a recruitment worth following closely over the next several years.
For now, Kentucky fans will have their eyes on Sept. 12—and on whether Pope’s early involvement eventually turns into a scholarship offer for one of Kentucky’s most promising young big men.
