The Kentucky Wildcats received a mixed injury update Thursday as the countdown to the 2026-27 season continues, giving Big Blue Nation both a reason for concern and something to feel encouraged about.
With Big Blue Madness now less than a month away, Kentucky is entering an important stretch of preseason preparation. The latest developments surrounding two key players have put the team’s health firmly back in the spotlight.
The biggest concern involves star transfer addition Milan Momcilovic.
The 6-foot-8 wing was recently spotted with his right pointer finger wrapped up while visiting the Kentucky Roadshow card shop. Photos quickly caught the attention of Kentucky fans, and a picture released by Kentucky Athletics from Thursday’s conditioning workout at Kroger Field showed Momcilovic’s right hand in a splint.
The exact nature and severity of the injury have not been publicly disclosed. The encouraging part is that the issue is not believed to be season-ending.
Still, Kentucky fans have plenty of reason to keep an eye on the situation.
Momcilovic is one of the most important pieces of Mark Pope’s roster. The former Iowa State standout arrives in Lexington after averaging 16.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season while shooting an impressive 50.6% from the field, 48.7% from three-point range and 87.8% from the free-throw line.
He was also named Second Team All-Big 12 before entering the transfer portal.
For a Kentucky team expected to rely heavily on perimeter shooting, keeping Momcilovic healthy will be a major priority.
A Much-Needed Positive Update
While Momcilovic’s situation created concern, Kentucky also received encouraging news involving Kam Williams.
Williams was seen walking without his protective boot during Thursday’s conditioning session at Kroger Field.
The 6-foot-8 wing suffered a foot injury in January and underwent two surgeries to address the issue. Throughout the summer, he has used a boot, scooter or crutches while working his way back.
Seeing Williams walking freely without assistance represents an encouraging step in his recovery.
Williams has previously said he expects to be ready for Kentucky’s Nov. 3 season opener against Manhattan. With roughly two months remaining before that game, getting out of the boot could be a significant sign that his recovery is moving in the right direction.
The Wildcats still have plenty of time before the regular season begins, but Mark Pope and his staff will undoubtedly want to be cautious with both players.
Kentucky has generated significant excitement heading into the new season, and Momcilovic is expected to be a major part of the team’s offensive attack.
For now, the message surrounding the Wildcats is mixed: one key player has raised injury concerns, while another appears to be making meaningful progress.
Big Blue Nation will be watching closely as Kentucky’s preseason continues.
