The uncertainty surrounding Kentucky basketball’s roster continues, with two Wildcats still caught in complicated eligibility battles that could have a major impact on the upcoming season.
Mark Mitchell and Alex Afari are both pursuing paths that could potentially allow them to compete for Kentucky, but neither player has received the final clarity the program and its fans are desperately waiting for.
Mitchell’s eligibility battle continues
Mitchell’s case stems from the NCAA’s eligibility structure involving athletes from the 2022 high school class.
Under the current rules, players from that class who exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 season were not automatically granted another season.
Mitchell challenged the NCAA’s position in court. On August 21, a federal judge granted a temporary injunction that allowed him to enter the transfer portal before ultimately committing to Kentucky.
That appeared to provide Mitchell with a path to continue his college career in Lexington.
But the situation quickly became more complicated.
The SEC reaffirmed its rule regarding intraconference transfers involving players who did not enter the transfer portal during the spring window.
That created another hurdle for Mitchell and Kentucky.
His attorneys have since amended their complaint as the legal battle involving the NCAA and SEC continues.
For the Wildcats, the outcome could be significant.
Mitchell was brought to Kentucky with the expectation that he could become an important piece of Mark Pope’s roster. If he is cleared, his presence would give Kentucky another talented option and strengthen the team’s depth.
If he remains unavailable, however, Pope could be forced to make adjustments.
Afari faces another critical moment
Afari’s situation has also taken several unexpected turns.
Following a federal ruling that temporarily granted athletes from the 2022 class another season of eligibility, Afari briefly rejoined Kentucky.
That decision, however, was later stayed by an appeals court.
Afari is now attempting to join Mitchell’s Kentucky lawsuit as he continues fighting for the opportunity to play another season.
The NCAA filed its opposition Friday, setting up another important step in the case.
Afari’s next major court appearance is scheduled for Monday, potentially providing another significant development in his eligibility fight.
Kentucky fans are left waiting
The Wildcats have already assembled an intriguing roster for the upcoming season, but the uncertainty surrounding Mitchell and Afari remains an important storyline.
For Mark Pope, knowing whether either player will be available could affect everything from roster depth to rotation decisions.
And for BBN, the wait continues.
Mitchell’s case is still unfolding, while Afari prepares for another crucial court date. With the season approaching, Kentucky fans are hoping the legal questions surrounding both players can finally be answered.
Until then, two major questions remain hanging over the Wildcats:
Will Mark Mitchell be allowed to play for Kentucky?
And will Alex Afari get another chance to suit up in Lexington?
The answers could have a major impact on Kentucky’s upcoming season.
