Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats are suddenly generating serious preseason buzz, and one major roster addition appears to have changed the national perception of the program.
After adding two-time All-SEC forward Mark Mitchell, Kentucky has climbed in multiple unofficial preseason rankings, with national analysts taking a much closer look at what Pope has assembled for the 2026-27 season.
FanDuel’s Jon Rothstein moved Kentucky up two spots to No. 15 in his preseason rankings. CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish was even more bullish, moving the Wildcats four spots to No. 12.
That kind of movement is significant.
Just weeks ago, Kentucky’s offseason was surrounded by questions. Now, the Wildcats are being discussed as a potential top-15 team—and some believe they could have a legitimate argument for a top-10 ranking.
Mitchell is a major reason for that change.
The former Duke and Missouri standout brings experience, versatility and proven SEC production to a roster that already features plenty of talent. His addition gives Pope another player capable of making an impact on both ends of the floor.
But Mitchell isn’t the only reason Kentucky’s outlook has changed.
Pope also managed to bring Malachi Moreno back to Lexington after the talented center withdrew from the 2026 NBA Draft. Kentucky added Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic, one of the more dangerous shooters available in the transfer portal, while also bringing in additional depth and experience.
Suddenly, the Wildcats have a roster capable of creating matchup problems across the floor.
There is, however, one enormous issue still hanging over the program: Mitchell’s eligibility.
Mitchell received a temporary restraining order allowing him to pursue a fifth season of college basketball after a Jefferson Circuit Court ruling in Kentucky. His eligibility situation remains unresolved, though, meaning his availability could have a major impact on Kentucky’s final preseason ranking and expectations.
If Mitchell is ultimately cleared, Kentucky could enter the season as one of the most talented teams in the country.
For Pope, that creates enormous pressure.
A roster this talented will come with expectations, and Kentucky fans will expect the Wildcats to turn that talent into results. But after the turbulence of the offseason, Pope and his staff deserve credit for rebuilding the roster and adding pieces that have dramatically improved Kentucky’s outlook.
The official preseason polls will eventually provide the final word.
For now, though, the message is becoming increasingly clear: Mark Pope’s gamble is paying off, and Kentucky is rapidly becoming a team nobody wants to overlook.
