Mark Pope is wasting no time building Kentucky’s future.
Just one day after securing a major commitment from Mark Mitchell to complete the 2026-27 Wildcats roster, Pope has already turned his attention toward one of the most highly regarded prospects in the 2028 recruiting class.
Kentucky is set to host Benjamin “Benji” Berrouet for an official visit on October 9, according to 247Sports’ Dushawn London. The visit will be Berrouet’s first official visit as he begins to narrow down his recruitment.
The timing could make the weekend especially significant for Big Blue Nation. Kentucky’s football team is scheduled to host LSU at Kroger Field that weekend, while the basketball program is still expected to announce one remaining exhibition game that could potentially take place during Berrouet’s visit.
Kentucky Making a Strong Impression
Berrouet is already considered one of the premier prospects in the 2028 class.
The 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward currently plays prep basketball in McKinney, Texas, and is ranked as the No. 3 small forward and No. 13 overall prospect in the 2028 Rivals Industry Ranking.
Kentucky has been closely monitoring him, including at the Peach Jam, where Wildcats assistants Cody Fueger and Mo Williams watched him compete.
Berrouet has particularly developed a strong relationship with Williams.
“I mainly talk to Mo. We talk a lot,” Berrouet previously told KSR. “He’s really real with you. He’s like a father figure to me. He talks like a dad and he treats you nice, explains what you did wrong during the game so you can do better next game.”
That relationship could become an important factor as Kentucky continues pursuing the talented forward.
Berrouet’s Recruitment Is Heating Up
Kentucky won’t have an easy path to landing Berrouet.
Several major programs have already entered the race, with Illinois and Louisville recently joining a recruitment that also includes Ole Miss, USC, Texas, Baylor and Houston.
Despite not yet being considered a consensus five-star prospect, Berrouet’s stock appears to be rising rapidly.
His international performance this summer provided another major indication of his potential.
Playing for Latvia at the U16 FIBA EuroBasket tournament, Berrouet helped lead the country to its first-ever U16 EuroBasket championship and was named the tournament’s MVP.
Across seven games, he averaged an eye-catching 23.5 points, 15.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game.
He saved one of his best performances for the championship game, recording 22 points and 13 rebounds as Latvia defeated Spain to capture the title in Romania.
Pope Already Looking Toward 2028
For Kentucky, the pursuit of Berrouet shows that Mark Pope isn’t simply focused on filling the current roster.
After bringing in Mitchell and putting the finishing touches on the 2026-27 team, Pope and his staff are already aggressively targeting the next generation of talent.
Berrouet’s October 9 official visit will give Kentucky an important opportunity to showcase the program, its coaching staff and its vision for the future.
With his recruitment continuing to gain momentum and several high-profile programs chasing him, Kentucky will have plenty of competition.
But Pope has already established an early connection with one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2028 class—and Big Blue Nation will be watching closely to see whether that relationship eventually turns into another major recruiting victory.
