Mark Pope has made it clear that connecting with Kentucky fans goes far beyond what happens on the basketball court.
Over the past several weeks, the Wildcats head coach and his staff have made a noticeable effort to bring Big Blue Nation closer to the program through social media and in-person events. With Kentucky not taking part in an international trip this summer, the coaching staff has found other ways to give fans a look at the team and its progress.
Through videos, Q&A sessions, ticket giveaways and updates from summer workouts, fans have received more opportunities to see how Pope’s revamped roster is developing both on and off the court.
The program even brought back a classic Kentucky tradition when Pope and the team visited Wheeler’s Pharmacy, a legendary Lexington location where previous UK coaches have spent time hearing stories and connecting with the community.
But Pope’s latest idea may be his most creative yet.
During an appearance on BBN Tonight with Maggie Davis, Pope announced the first-ever Kentucky Men’s Basketball Media Madness, scheduled for September 17.
The event will give members of the media a chance to experience basketball from the players’ perspective. After the Wildcats finish practice, journalists will be suited up in athletic gear and put through drills before competing in 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games.
The event will then conclude with a postgame press conference, except this time the media will be asking the questions.
Pope also challenged members of the media to spend the next several weeks getting into shape for the competition.
“I would like to hear a weekly report, video would be best, maybe some audio, on your training protocol that you guys have been doing so you guys can come in and show out and win this thing on September 17th,” Pope said.
The challenge appears to have been taken seriously, with journalists, bloggers and other Kentucky basketball personalities already beginning their preparations.
For Pope, the event is another opportunity to make the program more accessible and strengthen the relationship between Kentucky basketball and the people who follow it.
After an offseason filled with roster changes and anticipation surrounding the 2026–27 Wildcats, those efforts could prove valuable.
Pope isn’t simply preparing his team for another season. He is also finding creative ways to make Big Blue Nation feel like part of the journey.
