With the start of the 2026-27 college basketball season just 100 days away, national analysts are beginning to release their preseason outlooks—and Kentucky is once again at the centre of the conversation.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf included the Wildcats in several of their biggest storylines for the upcoming season. While they praised Kentucky’s revamped roster and recognised its championship potential, they also made it clear that head coach Mark Pope enters Year 3 with significant expectations.
According to ESPN, Pope’s second season failed to meet the lofty standards that surrounded the program. After entering the year with one of the nation’s most expensive and highly regarded rosters, Kentucky struggled through an inconsistent campaign, finishing with disappointing losses late in the season before suffering a second-round NCAA Tournament exit against Iowa State.
Although the offseason initially brought frustration with several recruiting and transfer misses, Pope responded by rebuilding the roster in impressive fashion. The biggest addition was star transfer Milan Momcilovic, widely viewed as one of the best players available in the transfer portal. ESPN believes Kentucky has assembled enough talent to begin the season ranked inside the national top 25.
Even with those improvements, the network noted that Pope cannot afford another disappointing campaign. Borzello even listed Kentucky as one of the blue-blood programs that could face major coaching questions if expectations are not met this season.
CBS Sports offered a similar outlook while also highlighting why this year’s team appears to be a much better fit for Pope’s style of basketball.
Analyst Isaac Trotter pointed to Kentucky’s elite shooting, led by Momcilovic, Kam Williams and Alex Wilkins, as one of the team’s biggest strengths. He also praised sophomore centre Malachi Moreno, calling him a potential impact player on both ends of the floor, while noting that the addition of Zoom Diallo gives Kentucky much-needed creativity and depth at point guard.
Trotter believes the Wildcats have all the pieces necessary to compete near the top of the SEC. However, he stressed that simply having a solid season will not be enough for a program with Kentucky’s expectations. The Wildcats need to remain in the SEC title race deep into February, avoid costly home losses, and make a legitimate run in the NCAA Tournament.
Beyond the pressure surrounding Pope, ESPN also highlighted several reasons for Big Blue Nation to be excited.
Momcilovic was named one of the nation’s top transfers to watch and a preseason All-American candidate. Moreno earned recognition as one of college basketball’s top breakout candidates heading into the season.
Kentucky also landed two games on ESPN’s list of the most anticipated non-conference matchups. The Wildcats’ Champions Classic showdown with Kansas and their rivalry game against Louisville are expected to be among the biggest games of the early season.
The message from both ESPN and CBS Sports is clear: Kentucky has assembled one of the nation’s most talented rosters, but talent alone will not satisfy expectations in Lexington. The pressure is on Mark Pope to turn that potential into victories and prove that the Wildcats are once again capable of competing for SEC and NCAA championships.
