Kentucky head coach Mark Pope says the Wildcats are not finished building their roster just yet.
With one scholarship spot still available ahead of the 2026-27 season, Pope confirmed that the coaching staff is actively exploring every possible option to strengthen the team before opening night. While he’s pleased with the current group and its chemistry, he believes the right addition could make an already talented roster even stronger.
“I really like this roster,” Pope said. “I like how the pieces fit together and the versatility we have. Even with a few players missing time this summer, we’ve shown we can still compete at a high level.”
Still, Pope made it clear that Kentucky’s staff is working every day to evaluate potential additions. Those options include international prospects, reclassified high school recruits, transfer portal players, and athletes who could become available if NCAA eligibility rules expand under the proposed five-in-five model.
“We’re in conversations every day,” Pope explained. “If there’s someone who can truly improve our team, we’re going to pursue that opportunity.”
The Wildcats have dealt with several injury setbacks during summer workouts, making additional depth even more valuable. Kam Williams recently underwent a second foot surgery and remains sidelined. Franck Kepnang has yet to participate fully as he continues recovering, while Justin McBride missed time with an illness and Trent Noah has been working back from a minor hamstring issue.
Despite those challenges, Pope praised his team’s attitude and chemistry throughout summer practices. He emphasized that he has complete confidence in the current roster but wants to leave every possibility open before the season begins.
“I’d go to battle with this group right now,” Pope said. “But if there’s an opportunity to become better, we’re going to keep looking.”
With more than 100 days remaining before Kentucky tips off the new season, the Wildcats still have time to add another impact player. Whether that addition comes from overseas, the transfer portal, a reclassified recruit, or a change in NCAA eligibility rules remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Mark Pope isn’t closing the door on improving his roster.
