Kentucky guard Kam Williams has faced another setback in his recovery after undergoing a second surgery on the foot he originally injured last season. Despite the unexpected development, head coach Mark Pope expressed confidence that the talented wing will be ready to contribute when the Wildcats begin the upcoming season.
Williams initially suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot during Kentucky’s game against Texas in late January. At the time, it appeared his season might be over, but his rehabilitation progressed faster than expected. He returned in time to help the Wildcats during both the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament, providing valuable minutes and knocking down key three-pointers throughout the postseason.
According to Pope, Williams’ recovery was moving in the right direction before complications developed.
“He was recovering really well and had made significant progress,” Pope explained. “But when he was close to being fully healed, the recovery stalled and even started moving backward. After consulting with doctors, he underwent another surgery. The good news is he’s recovering well now, and we’re very confident he’ll be available this season.”
The setback explains why Williams has recently been seen wearing a walking boot, using a scooter, and later relying on crutches during offseason events.
Before the injury, Williams showed flashes of becoming an important piece of Kentucky’s future. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 6.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game while shooting 44.9% from the field and 35.9% from three-point range. His breakout performance came against Bellarmine, where he knocked down a career-high eight three-pointers.
Following Kentucky’s NCAA Tournament exit, Williams reflected on the mental and physical challenges of recovering from his first major injury. He admitted there were moments of doubt but credited his teammates, coaches, and training staff for helping him stay positive throughout the rehabilitation process.
Now, Williams begins another recovery with the goal of returning fully healthy. While the second surgery delays his progress, Kentucky remains optimistic that he’ll be back at full strength before the season begins. Until then, the Wildcats’ added depthโincluding transfer Milan Momcilovicโprovides the team with additional options while one of its key wings continues working toward his return.
