There is already a different feeling surrounding Kentucky basketball this summer, and one Wildcats legend believes the change is impossible to ignore.
Former Kentucky All-American Goose Givens has spent plenty of time watching Mark Pope’s team during summer practices, and his biggest takeaway isn’t about talent or statistics. Instead, it’s the attitude and commitment he sees every day.
After questioning last season’s chemistry and overall energy, Givens believes this year’s Wildcats have embraced a completely different mindset.
“The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that this team loves to practice,” Givens said. “They enjoy putting in the work, and you can already see them improving. Even though it’s only July, they’re clicking in a lot of areas.”
While he acknowledged the team still has plenty of room to grow as players continue learning Pope’s system and building chemistry, Givens believes their work ethic gives them a strong foundation heading into the season.
Another major difference, according to Givens, is Mark Pope’s approach.
The Kentucky head coach has reportedly brought a much more demanding attitude into practices this offseason. Givens praised not only Pope but the entire coaching staff for setting a higher standard and making every practice count.
He believes everyone understands how important this season is for the program and that urgency is showing from day one.
One player who has stood out more than anyone is transfer point guard Zoom Diallo.
Givens believes Diallo has naturally stepped into the leadership role Kentucky lacked at times last season. Rather than avoiding responsibility, Diallo has embraced it, becoming the team’s floor general and someone teammates naturally follow.
Having a true leader at point guard could prove to be one of the Wildcats’ biggest strengths this season.
Givens also praised Furman transfer Alex Wilkins, highlighting his ability to score in multiple ways. While Wilkins may not rely solely on outside shooting or elite speed, Givens said his craftiness allows him to consistently find quality scoring opportunities.
With Diallo handling the offense and Milan Momcilovic stretching defenses with his shooting, Wilkins could become one of Kentucky’s most versatile offensive weapons.
Another player who has impressed Givens despite missing time with an illness is forward Justin McBride, whose development has continued to generate positive reviews throughout the summer.
The Wildcats still have months before opening night, but early reports from practice continue to paint an encouraging picture. Improved chemistry, stronger leadership, greater depth, and a renewed commitment to hard work have many around the program believing this team is ahead of schedule.
If those early impressions carry into the regular season, Kentucky could look much different from the team fans watched a year ago.
