Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has intensified the Wildcats’ pursuit of five-star point guard Reese Alston, setting up what could become one of the most closely watched recruiting battles in the Bluegrass State.
With one scholarship spot still available on Kentucky’s roster, Pope continues balancing the search for immediate help while aggressively building for the future. Alston has emerged as one of the program’s top priorities, whether he ultimately joins the 2027 recruiting class or decides to reclassify.
Pope has made multiple trips to evaluate the talented guard in person during the summer recruiting period. Assistant coach Mikhail McLean has also been heavily involved, underscoring just how serious Kentucky is about landing one of the nation’s premier backcourt prospects.
The Wildcats, however, are far from alone.
Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey has spent considerable time recruiting Alston and has made him one of the Cardinals’ biggest priorities. Kelsey has attended numerous games featuring the standout guard and has worked hard to build a strong relationship with him over the past year.
Several other major programs, including LSU, Houston, and Wichita State, are also showing strong interest, making Alston’s recruitment one of the hottest storylines in the 2027 class.
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing around 175 pounds, Alston is known for his explosive first step, creative ball-handling, and ability to generate offense off the dribble. His knack for attacking the basket and creating his own shot has earned him five-star status and significant NBA buzz.
Kentucky believes Alston has the potential to become the next elite lead guard in Lexington. Although the Wildcats currently have talented point guard Zoom Diallo leading the position, the long-term outlook makes Alston an attractive addition for Pope’s program.
The Wildcats have already built momentum in the 2027 recruiting class with the commitment of five-star wing Ryan Hampton, and adding Alston would further strengthen what could become one of the nation’s top classes.
Louisville remains a major obstacle, though. The Cardinals have invested significant time in Alston’s recruitment and hope to keep one of the country’s top guards from heading to their biggest rival.
One important step still remains for Kentucky: securing an official campus visit. Louisville hosted Alston previously, giving the Cardinals an early advantage, but the Wildcats are expected to continue pushing hard in hopes of bringing him to Lexington.
With recruiting expected to accelerate over the coming months, the battle between Kentucky and Louisville could ultimately come down to relationships, player development, and each program’s long-term vision.
For Mark Pope, winning this recruiting fight would do more than add another elite talent. It would provide another statement victory over Kentucky’s biggest in-state rival while continuing to build the foundation for sustained success in Lexington.
