Kentucky fans can finally stop worrying about Justin McBride.
After several Wildcats team photos from a recent trip to Las Vegas surfaced without the James Madison transfer, speculation quickly spread across social media. McBride was also absent from Kentucky’s scrimmage against La Familia before the alumni team’s opening game in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), leaving many fans wondering if something more serious had happened.
Now, the mystery has been solved.
According to Kentucky Sports Radio, McBride had been battling an illness that kept him away from team activities for several days. His father, Regis McBride, later confirmed the situation in a Facebook comment, reassuring Big Blue Nation that there was no cause for concern.
“My son has been under the weather for the past week, and he was in Vegas,” Regis McBride wrote. “Summer flu bug; he is fine. R E L A X.”
The update should ease the minds of Kentucky fans, as the illness appears to be nothing more than a temporary setback. McBride is expected to return to full health well before preparations for the upcoming season intensify.
McBride arrived in Lexington after transferring from James Madison, where he established himself as a versatile and experienced forward. Throughout summer workouts, he has drawn praise for his physicality, basketball IQ, and willingness to do the little things that help teams win. Earlier this offseason, head coach Mark Pope even compared aspects of McBride’s game and mindset to former Kentucky standout Julius Randle.
Although missing a few summer activities sparked concern, there is no indication that the illness will have any lasting impact on his availability for the 2026-27 season.
As Kentucky continues building chemistry with a talented roster featuring newcomers like Milan Momcilovic, Zoom Diallo, Ousmane N’Diaye, and returning standout Trent Noah, McBride is expected to play an important veteran role. His experience, toughness, and versatility should provide valuable depth as the Wildcats prepare for another season with championship expectations under Mark Pope.
For now, Big Blue Nation can breathe easy—Justin McBride is healthy, recovering from a brief summer illness, and remains firmly on track to contribute this season.
