Replacing a player like Tyler Bell is never going to be easy.
Bell quickly became one of Kentucky’s biggest stars and, as many expected, his outstanding play led to him being selected 10th overall by the Colorado Rockies in the 2026 MLB Draft. His departure leaves a major vacancy in the Wildcats’ middle infield, but head coach Nick Mingione believes he has found an experienced option to help fill that role.
Kentucky added former Ohio State infielder Lee Ellis through the transfer portal, bringing a veteran presence and a productive bat to Lexington.
Ellis spent the past three seasons with the Buckeyes, developing into one of their most reliable offensive players. Over his collegiate career, he has posted a .273 batting average, a .396 on-base percentage, and a .493 slugging percentage, showing the ability to consistently reach base while providing extra-base power.
During the last two seasons, Ellis elevated his game even further, batting .314/.438/.556 while drawing 54 walks. Although he struck out 95 times and committed nine errors during that span, his offensive production made him one of Ohio State’s key contributors.
Defensively, Ellis has experience at both shortstop and second base. He played primarily at shortstop earlier in his career before moving to second base last season. With Bell gone, Ellis could shift back to shortstop for the Wildcats, giving Kentucky valuable flexibility in the infield.
While Ellis may not possess the same elite upside that Bell brought to Lexington, he offers a combination of experience, athleticism, and offensive consistency that should strengthen Kentucky’s lineup. Improving his defensive consistency will be a key focus, but his ability to contribute on both sides of the ball makes him an important addition.
Ellis becomes one of several transfer portal additions for the Wildcats as Mingione continues to reshape the roster. Kentucky’s transfer class now includes:
OF Brody Chrisman
OF Alex Kelsey
LHP Kale Hammer
RHP Logan Hastings
RHP PJ Craig
RHP Mason Snyder
LHP Cooper Corkren
C Brayden Ricketts
C/1B Riley Jackson
INF Owen Lee
INF Lee Ellis
IF/OF JP Peltier
.
With significant playing time now available in the infield, Ellis will have an opportunity to establish himself quickly in Lexington. His experience, solid offensive production, and positional versatility give Kentucky another dependable piece as the Wildcats prepare for the 2027 season.
As always for Mingione’s program, the offense should receive a boost from the new additions, but Kentucky’s success will likely depend on whether its pitching staff can perform at a championship level.
