Kentucky landed one of the biggest additions of the offseason when Milan Momcilovic decided to return to college basketball instead of remaining in the NBA Draft. Although Arizona and Louisville were among the schools pursuing him, the talented forward says his heart was leaning toward Kentucky much earlier than many people realized.
Speaking about his commitment, Momcilovic shared a memorable story about how it all happened.
When it came time to call Mark Pope with his decision, he walked out to the driveway of his family’s home because he didn’t want his parents listening in on the conversation. At the same time, Pope happened to be relaxing on the beach when he received the call that Kentucky had secured one of the nation’s top transfer talents.
For Momcilovic, the choice wasn’t nearly as difficult as it may have appeared from the outside.
He admitted that Kentucky felt like the right destination early in the recruiting process. While the Wildcats’ legendary basketball tradition and national spotlight were certainly appealing, those weren’t the factors that ultimately convinced him.
The biggest reason was Mark Pope himself.
Momcilovic explained that he immediately connected with Pope’s vision for how he would be used on the court. The Kentucky coach made it clear that his offensive system was built for a player with Momcilovic’s skill set, even telling him he couldn’t think of a better fit anywhere in basketball.
That confidence made a lasting impression.
His belief in Pope wasn’t based on recruiting conversations alone. During his time at Iowa State, Momcilovic had the opportunity to compete against Pope’s BYU teams in the Big 12. Watching that offense up close—with its constant ball movement, spacing, and emphasis on shooting—left him convinced that it was a system where he could thrive.
By the time the recruiting process reached its final stages, he already knew where he wanted to be.
Momcilovic also revealed that Kentucky’s blue-blood status wasn’t what sealed the deal. Instead, he valued trust and personal relationships above everything else. He described himself as someone who needs a genuine connection with his head coach, believing that relationship is far more important than the prestige of a program.
That trust in Pope ultimately became the deciding factor.
Now expected to be one of Kentucky’s featured players, Momcilovic arrives in Lexington with confidence in both the coaching staff and the system. If his belief in Pope translates to the court, Big Blue Nation may soon understand why he felt Kentucky was the perfect fit from the very beginning.
