The offseason is often where future stars begin separating themselves, and that’s exactly what appears to be happening for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
With new head coach Michael Malone leading his first summer in Chapel Hill, the program has wasted no time establishing a competitive environment. Every workout has carried added importance as players compete for roles, and one player has consistently caught the attention of the coaching staff.
That player is Neoklis Avdalas.
The 6-foot-9 transfer has quickly become one of the most talked-about performers in North Carolina’s summer workouts. Coaches have been impressed by his ability to handle the ball, make advanced reads, and create scoring opportunities for teammates. His rare combination of size and playmaking has allowed him to stand out in pickup games and team drills alike.
What has made Avdalas especially intriguing is the confidence with which he has settled into his new surroundings. Rather than looking like a player still adjusting to a new system, he has played with poise and composure, showing the leadership qualities expected of a primary floor general.
His versatility has also given Malone’s staff plenty to work with. At 6-foot-9, Avdalas can initiate the offense, push the pace in transition, and defend multiple positions, making him one of the most unique pieces on UNC’s roster. Those traits could make him a key part of the Tar Heels’ identity this season.
While Avdalas has generated much of the buzz, he hasn’t been the only standout.
Freshman wing Maximo Adams has showcased his scoring ability throughout the summer, while 7-foot center Sayon Keita has impressed with his rebounding, rim protection, and physical presence around the basket.
Together, the trio has helped create optimism surrounding Malone’s first roster at North Carolina. The energy and competitiveness displayed during offseason workouts suggest the Tar Heels are building a team capable of making noise once the regular season begins.
Summer workouts don’t determine a season, but they often reveal which players are ready to take the next step. If the early signs are any indication, Neoklis Avdalas is becoming exactly the type of difference-maker UNC hoped it was getting—and Tar Heel fans have every reason to be excited about what’s ahead.
